Devils
The children had been told that the old Jew had a devil in his eyes and that if you looked you could see it.
So they stared at his face and held his gaze.
He’s finally asked them – “What is it you are looking for?”
” The devil they replied….the devil in all Jews eyes…. ”
He brushed them off.
Years later those children stood in front of the mirror staring at their own eyes and wondered if the devil was really in their own?
They never saw the old man again.
They were sure they never did see the devil, the one they looked for in his eyes.
But there were devils.
They were everywhere and when it was all over they were in men, not in eyes, but in barbed wire, chimneys of smoke and in the bombed out cities all around.

The Lion
There are those who believe in their own righteousness as if they have never realized that a lion does not have to.go around telling anyone that they are a lion.
Some say yes to God then turn and do not do his will.
They walk with their heads held high ignoring all those whose gaze they should meet.
Never knowing it is their own soul they help to kill.
As if the forest full of trees is seen in a singular vision and no one remembers that each make up the whole.
Still they go about tieing up heavy burdens onto those they should help always careful to remind everyone that they themselves are the lions.
They never mention the dignity they stole.
When the lion walked among them they ignored him because he was gentle as a sheep.
Instead of honoring him they led him to the slaughter carrying out their righteousness and denying him his.
Even his closest freinds had fallen asleep.
Then the Lion walked alone and far to a lonely and terrible place.
A place where evil men took his life and never thought twice about it.
He died with his blood upon his praying face.
(He opened not his mouth to roar.)
They made the Lion bleed.
He opened not his mouth and and let his blood be spilled by their actions for the sins of mankind.
The Lion was killed and all abandoned him and ran away with great speed.
He was left cold and dead .
Among those who have tasted death and those who disregarded his words and actions saying …
“No lion would die like that with a crown of thorns upon his head.”

Eastmont Park (baseball dreams)
I saw Eastmont Park early in the day reflected in the eyes of young players,
ready for glory and full of baseball dreams.
I understand the joy of playing baseball on bright and sunny days.
I understand the joy of winning and that losing with class is a better lesson than being victorious like a jerk.
Most of all I understand dignity.
Screaming , chanting, yelling.
Parents,
Loudly,
Disrupting,
All these baseball dreams.
I left Eastmont Park at the end of the day.
Loud and disrespectful people spread out on the covered bleachers,
frightened children spread out on the field, being reminded it was only noise.
Riding home I was disappointed, ready for sleep and the renewal of those baseball dreams.
